Process Overview
The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) initiative focuses on encouraging more students to bike and walk to schools, through infrastructure improvements, enforcement, and safety education. These initiatives focus on improving safety, and creating opportunities for physical activity for students.
The SRTS program can involve various groups, such as:
- State-level departments of transportation
- MPOs
- Local governments
- Individual schools and school districts
In an effort to support such a diverse group of data consumers, the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has developed a public Safe Routes to School Dashboard to help each of these groups report and track near-school crashes across the state. With this information, all involved parties can identify potential engineering, enforcement, and education initiatives to reduce near-school crashes and improve the walkability and bikeability around the schools in their communities.

SRTS Teams can utilize the ITD Safe Routes to School Dashboard, available on the ITD Highway Safety website (ITD.idaho.gov/safety), to identify areas for improvement and apply for federal SRTS funding to implement their SRTS plan. This Dashboard, which visualizes data on all near-school crashes (crashes that occurred within 1,000 feet of any K-12 school) in the state of Idaho, helps SRTS teams identify key data points, such as times, locations, and contributing factors.
With this information, the SRTS team can determine which infrastructure improvements, enforcement strategies, or education initiatives to include in their SRTS plan to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety at schools in their communities.
